HOW IT WORKS?

Prayer 4 God

HOW TO PRAY THE ROSARY?

The rosary is divided into five groups of ten beads called decades. As we pray the rosary we meditate on the events of Our Lord's life and Passion, which are called Mysteries. The repetition of the prayers assists in this prayerful meditation. The rosary, in essence, is a compendium of the Gospel and leads us, through the intercession of Our Lady, to contemplate Jesus Christ. The Holy Rosary is an important part of the Catholic faith and it is used by some who are faithful. The beads on the chain allow people to pray without worrying about keeping count. They just need to run the beads through their fingers with each prayer.

Pray the Rosary

BEGIN BY PRAYING THE SIGN OF THE CROSS:

1. On the crucifix pray the Apostles Creed. The rosary begins with 1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys for an increase in the virtues of faith, hope, and love.
2. On the first rosary bead, pray the Our Father.
3. On each of the next three beads pray the Hail Mary. After the last Hail Mary, pray the Glory Be & the Fatima prayer. Next you will pray 1 Our Father and 10 Hail Marys for each rosary mystery. You can find the 5 rosary mysteries here.
4. Announce the first mystery, and then pray the Our Father. (Ex: "The first Joyful Mystery is the Annunciation.")
5. Pray 10 Hail Marys. After the last Hail Mary pray the Glory Be and the Fatima prayer.
6. Announce the second mystery, and then pray the Our Father. (Ex: "The second Joyful Mystery is the Visitation."”)
7. Pray 10 Hail Marys. After the last Hail Mary pray the Glory Be and the Fatima prayer.
8. Continue to pray 1 Our Father and 10 Hail Marys three more times, announcing the third, fourth, and fifth mysteries before each decade. After the last Hail Mary pray the Glory Be and the Fatima prayer.
Lastly, pray the Hail Holy Queen and the concluding prayer.

Pray the Rosary

The rosary takes fifteen to twenty minutes to pray. The rosary is a means of grace and has many spiritual benefits. Many saints have encouraged praying the rosary daily. It helps you to grow in virtue, helps you overcome life's problems, and works as a spiritual weapon. Read the 15 promises of the Blessed Virgin Mary to those who pray the rosary.

HOW MANY PRAYERS ARE IN THE ROSARY?

The five-decade rosary, which is the most common, uses four prayers, repeated. Each small bead is a Hail Mary, while the large beads before each decade is an Our Father. The chain after the decade is Glory be to the Father. The whole rosary is made of 50 Hail Mary's, plus five Our Father’s and five Glory be to the Father's.

WHAT ARE THE MYSTERIES OF THE ROSRY?

There are four rosary mysteries (Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, Luminous) and five parts of each mystery which correspond to the five decades of the rosary. The Mysteries are meditations based on the life and death of Jesus Christ and each type of mystery covers five distinct stages of Jesus’ life. The Mysteries of the Rosary are designed to help focus our prayer on the life, ministry, and Passion of Our Lord. In many cases, a spiritual fruit is associated with each mystery.

AS YOU PRAY, MEDITATE ON THE MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY:

WHAT IS THE HOLY ROSARY?

The Holy Rosary is a chain with beads on it to aid in the counting of prayers. It is used by Catholics and encouraged by saints to help the faithful stay focused on the mysteries of the rosary while they pray.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SAY THE ROSARY?

It takes about 15-20 minutes to say the rosary when you are saying it on your own. A group praying the rosary may take up to 30 minutes, due to the breaks.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE BEADS ON THE ROSARY?

Each bead on the rosary represents a prayer, with the size or shape of the bead indicating which prayer. The idea behind them is to free the mind to meditate on the mysteries, since you don't have to mentally keep track of how many prayers you have completed.

The most common rosary contains five decades or five groups of ten beads.
There are large beads between the decades. You can also find smaller, one decade rosaries, and fifteen decade rosaries, which are typically used by religious orders. The larger rosaries include a short strand or chain that contains a crucifix, three small beads and a large bead at either end.
Small beads are used for Hail Mary prayers, while the large beads are used to mark the Lord's Prayer.

WHAT MAKES A ROSARY?

A rosary is simply a counting device to aid in prayer. It may be as simple as a knotted string or it may be made of chins linking beads made of nearly any material. Beads are made of everything from wood, bone or class to crushed flowers, silver or crystal. Some beads may even have a small space inside to hold holy water or something sacred. These may be linked with fine chains, thread or silk, depending on what your preference is.

WHY DO WE USE THE ROSARY?

While a rosary is not necessary in order to pray, it does make the act of repeating the prayers simpler.
By providing a simple, tactile method of counting the prayers, the mind is left open to meditate on the mysteries of the rosary.

SHOULD WE PRAY THE ROSARY DURING HOLY MASS?

It is not appropriate to pray the rosary during Holy Mass. You are supposed to pay attention to the Mass while there. However, you may use the rosary before and after the service.

JUST TRY IT!

We encourage you to give it a try.
If it takes too long at first, you can shorten it. Some ways to shorten it are to say just one full decade a day, or to say all five decades but with only one Hail Mary per decade. The Rosary is one of the most beautiful Catholic prayers. With Mary, we watch the mysteries of Christ's life unfold. In the Rosary, Mary teaches us about Christ, leads us to Christ, and prays with us in Christ. So give yourself an incredible gift: Learn how to pray the Rosary!

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
